This HINCKLEY family is traced back to the 1500's in Kent, England. The immigrant family came in April 1635 in the Hercules from Sandwich, Kent.Peter W. COLDHAM's Complete Book of Emigrants references Public Record Office, CO1/8:Samuel Hinckley of Tenterden, wf. Sara, daus. Susan & Mary, & kinswoman Elizabeth Hinkle {sic}.--Son Thomas must have come, too.

Samuel HINCKLEY(19 Jan. 1789 - 15 Oct. 1839)m. Abigail DUNHAM (11 Dec. 1804 - 24 Jan. 1878) & had George Russell HINCKLEY (5 Feb. 1832, Madrid, Franklin, ME - 8 July 1911) who m. 13 Apr. 1854, Phillips, Franklin, ME, Louisa W. LAKE.

RootsWeb Family Trees shows the line from Samuel, b. 1789, ME, back to the immigrant Samuel HINCKLEY & also back to Deacon John DUNHAM, from England to Leyden, Netherlands,& to Plymourh Colony by 1633.

In 1860, Madrid, Franklin, ME: all born in Maine, HINKLEY, George, 25; Louisa W., 21; Wesley E., 4; Loretta, 2 [aka Etta].

In 1900, Phillips, ME: George, b. Feb. 1833 {'32?} & wf. Rachael, b. Aug. 1832, were next to W. Eugene, b. Apr. 1857 {'56?} & family.

Samuel HINCKLEY & A. DUNHAM also had Ezekiel HINCKLEY (23 May 1815 - 11 July 1892)who m. 1836, Abigail LAKE (8 July 1820 - 21 Mar. 1883).

Ancestry lists Ezekiel LAKE (ca. 1786 - 10 Jan. 1862, Madrid, ME) as father of Abigail.

There are books on both DUNHAM & HINCKLEY families.I descend from both.

My guess as to one reason for leaving:Louisa was 21 in 1860 with two children, aged 4 & 2, & she may have had another son, Lafayette, in 1861. She probably was too immature for her responsibilities. There would have been other factors.Do you have the divorce record, dated _ _ 1861?
