My grandfather,John Hind, was born in Preston, 1866. Left there in the 1880's for work at Barrow in Furness. He was the oldest son of 9 children. Had brothers Frederick and Edward, amongst others. So, your Kate could be part of this family. I have a cousin in Preston whom I will write to and ask what she knows. I can't get her interested in genealogy but she will answer specific questions. I will let you know.
