To backtrack a bit...Our first HINGLE in New Orleans was Jean Pierre ENGEL. He was a soldier in the Swiss Army, Karrer Regiment. That regiment provided security for the French Colonies, and eventually ran out of Swiss to man their fortifications. Thence, they hired Germans. It is said the regiment was equally Swiss & German. Since Jean Pierre ENGEL's grandchildren all listed him as "German", there can be little doubt he was one of the German's hired by the Swiss Army. Yes, he was German (not French, not Swiss). In 1766 he died in Mobile, part of Louisiana. I do not know why he was in Mobile. At that time he was out of the army and engaged in carpentry. Perhaps he was in Mobile on a job.
