Sorry, I am new at this and lost the rest of my message regarding the Hirneisen name.Bahlow gives Hirneiss as being from Munich. He has "Hierneis probably = helmet".However, `hirn' is defined in Cassell's 1906 "German-English Dictionary" as brain. Thus, we could liberally say that Hierneis means brain cover. That is the purpose of a helmet in a sense.
Hirnlos and Muckenhirn should consume a lot of Hirnworst to improve their situation.
Hirnlos = brainless; Muckenhirn = mosquito brain; & Hirnworst = brain sausage. These are all surnames found in Bahlow.
It is quite easy to see how Hirneisen could become Herneisen over the years. It most likely was not intentional; rather, it just happened. A generation after our German ancestors arrived in the 1700's and early 1800's, the long history of literacy was lost for a genraation or so in many families. The first "i" in Hirneisen is a longEnglish "e" sound if pronounced as Germans would most likely pronounce it.
Don't would about so minor a change. One of my Katz/Catts families changed their name intentionally to Saner. They say it was because they were saner than cats.
