Lisa, About the only time a slave's name was used is when they were either being sold or willed to someone. Any slaves David M Hobbs had owned would have been emancipated before he died in 1884, so the only possible record would be if he sold them before they were emancipated. Check the Deed Books for Holmes Co. from the time Neal was born, until you start finding emanumissions recorded. The 1850 Slave schedule just used an age and gender description. I did not find David M. Hobbs listed as an owner in that schedule, though there was a John F. Hubbs who was listed as owning 22. Another thought, if you know who David M's parents were check to see if either of them willed any slaves to him.
