Hoefler, etc. may be more common than wethink.From what I can interpret "hofler" is someone who lives or worker on an estate.The name seems to be originate in southwest Germany...Bayern, etc..Probably a peasantclass and from historical association probably Roman Catholics...SW Germany was a focus of RC suppor during and after the Reformation.My great grandfather came from the area around the Black Forest.The family immigrated to the US during the period of the Franco-Prussion War...wise move.
