Looks like you have a lot more info than I do. The 1870 Census shows that along with the 2 boys and Susan, there was a Tilly Howard age 14 living with them ( no other info on her) and Rosa Dorris age 13 black domestic.Also, the MoniteauCounty courthouse was completed in 1868 and the name S.E. Hoge is on the front of it.Samuel served in the Missouri Home Guard, 1st regiment, H company, Infantry.This unit was established on June 17, 1861 and disbanded 3 months later.His rank was Private.Apparently, Samuel and Julia applied for Civil War Pensions but it doesn't look like they received pensions.I found an article "The Norman Murder" from 1863 about a slave killing his master when Samuel was sheriff. The article is in the History of Moniteau County.It was the first hanging in Moniteau County.

Sorry for the confusion about where we live.We live in Clayton, CA.I didn't even think about the relation of the California statement.Frank moved to Fresno, CA sometime after 1912 as Ken's father (Elmer Hoge)) was born in IL. in 1912.I am just starting to expand the info done by other members of the family.
