Alga dau. of Mark, Cocke County, TN

By Rick Bryant March 12, 2014 at 11:31:57

While researching my Bryant line, I found the grave of Addie Bryant, 1867-1936, on FindAGrave in Hunt County, TX. On further investigation, I found her Texas death certificate stating that she was born in Newport, Cocke County, TN, 9 Apr 1867, and that her father's name was Mark Holder. Checking the census data for both 1870 and 1880 I found the Mark (or Marke) Holder family in Cocke County, TN, with a female child named Alga born about 1867. Addie's death certificate also states that she was the widow of W T Bryant. I have a William Taylor Bryant, also buried in Hunt County, TX, 1868-1942. His first wife, Myrtle, died in 1908. On the 1930 census, William Taylor can be found in Lubbock County, Texas, living with a brother, Lemuel Bryant. Here he is listed as divorced. On the 1940 census he is also found in Lubbock County, Texas, living with a different brother, James Coleman Bryant. Here he is listed as widowed. My suspicion is that Alga was also known as Addie; that somehow she made her way to Texas (perhaps married to someone else), and that sometime after 1908, she married William T Bryant, and that sometime before 1930 they were divorced. Does anyone have any confirmation of my suspicions?
