As you have discovered HOLDEN / HOLDING in Lancashire is almost like Smith everywhere else. Unfortunately I'm a rank beginner when it comes to our surname. My branch goes back to Emmanuel HOLDING b abt 1832 in Blackburn & with the exception of him being listed once as HOLDEN I'm not much help with your inquiry or tracing beyond 1832.
