HOLMES family with roots in Clan HOME of Scotland
As a help to anyone not aware of the early origins of the HOLMES name and family, I offer the following information:
The name of HOLMES is said to have been derived from a geographic term used in Scotland, known in the Gaelic language as "Ihom" or "Holm", meaning a small island in a river.
The roots of the HOLMES family tree began with the marriage of Prince MALRED, brother of DUNCAN I, King of Scotland (crowned 1034 A.D.), to Lady ALDGATHA, granddaughter of ETHELRED "The Unready", King of England (crowned 968 A.D.). From this marriage, came their first son, COSPATRICK, Earl of Northumberland (who fought at the Battle of Hastings). It was COSPATRICK's grandson, WILLIAM, Earl of Dunbar who married Princess ADA, daughter of WILLIAM "The Lion", King of Scotland, who reigned from 1165 A.D. to 1214 A.D.
As a dowry, Princess ADA brought with her to the marriage as her estate, the lands of "IHOM or "HOME" as it was spelt in the English language, as well as HOME Castle.
WILLIAM and ADA had a son named PATRICK DUNBAR, the Earl of March, who died fighting at the Battle of Falkirk, 1297 A.D. However, before his death, he had a son born in 1172 A.D. who became ALDAN de HOME, the first recorded ancestor of the Clan HOME of Scotland, from the lands of HOME in Berwickshire, Scotland.
It is not known when direct ancestors of the Scottish Clan HOME emigrated across the Tweed River into England. The earliest bearers of the family name lived along the border between Scotland and England near the Tweed River, in what is now known as Berwickshire, Scotland. In the Tweed River there was a small island and the earliest HOLMES ancestors living there were known by this geographic description (i.e. John, of the Holm).
The family name has been seen in a variety of form, such as: HOLMES, HOMES, HOME, HULM, HULMS, HULME, HOLM, HULMES, HOLMS, HOLME, HOOME, and HUME. The earliest recorded HOLMES family ancestors in England are URKELL de HOLMES in the Assize Rolls of Yorkshire in 1219 A.D. and WILLIAM del Holmes in the Subsidy Rolls of Derbyshire in 1327 A.D.
Therefore, the family name of HOLMES has the distinction of having both English Coat of Arms described Heraldically as: "Barry of six Or & Azure, in chief a mullet of the second, on a canton Gules a cinquefoil argent.", and being the primary family Sept of the Scottish Clan HOME, from which the families of HOLMES originates.
