Melissa,I am working on our Jordan family and I came across the Hood girls too. I am NOT a GENEALOGIST. I am a researcher. Here is what I found in the census reports.Take a look and let me know what you think?
Helen May Hood (born Feb 14, 1898 - most likely in Wake County (not confirmed), died Jan 20, 1970, Raleigh). The 1900 census has her living with her parents - William H Hood and Florence M. Hood - in the Third Ward of Raleigh (Sheet 8)- with sister "Millie" - Believe this is Mildred (born April 1894,most likely Wake (not confirmed).I can't make out exactly what her dad did for a living, some sort of "keeper", maybe you can tell me? Looks like there were three children and one died before 1900.
Anyway, 1910 Mildred AND Helen May are both in the Methodist Orphanage.I have learned firsthand the METHODIST (and the Raleigh ones in particular) kept HORRIBLE records and efforts to try and find out more from them failed.Helen married Dec 9, 1915 in Wake. She was only 17.I am having some trouble finding the original marriage license but I will try again tomorrow. If I get it, hopefully it will confirm her parents.
There was a terrible influenza outbreak in Raleigh in the early 1900s.The city began keeping death certificates and the date 1908 has been bantered about at the State Archives. I am planning to go back out to the Archives tomorrow to go through4 boxes of 'unworked' Wake death records.I have Helen May (and her parents as ones I am still missing!) If I find anything I will post it.
Hopes this helped.
