Melissa,

Two more notes I have - CHECK WILLIAM HENRY SR's PROBATE records in Wake. The HOOD LAND ran close if not overlapped the Jordans at some point near Buffaloe Creek (for the Jordans we are talking early 1700 deeds/grants, I would bet the same for the Hoods. The two surnames bounce between Wake, Johnston (which morphed in part from Edgecombe and into Nash)in the 1700s. WH Sr's probate mentions two infants - "William Henry and Catherine". Their guardian ("B R Hood") failed to renew his bond and was stripped from being guardian May 17, 1871. (he may have move to Ohio). I haven't read the whole file yet. Is this the same William H who married a Florence and lived in Ward 3?

Also there was a curious notice in the Charlotte Observer, page 1 Tuesday Jan 9, 1906 about the suicide of W H. Hood and a Viola Page??? The suicide invalidated his life insurance policy. The article goes on to mention Mr. Hood's wife (no name provided) was "continuing ill with consumption and the widow and children are without means" The article concludes that "action will be instituted against the woman for keeping the house, though as yet no such action has been taken".

I have this marked to investigate further. This W H was supposedly buried in City Cemetery. This could explain how the girls ended up in the Methodist Orphanage.Again, pieces to a puzzle... many more pieces needed before all fits.Maybe others can help solve this. Maybe a Hood recalls a story?

Be curious what your thoughts are? I need to check the Raleigh city directories.

BTW- the probate record, as you most likely already know, is now available on www.familysearch.org.
