George S Hooper d. 1864 & wife Lydia Pratt

By Anne Goodwin April 08, 2014 at 09:41:16

Last month, I ran across an index (at Wofford College in SC) which had an entry for the obit of George S. Hooper. I've posted a transcript and scan of the death notice at my website http://www.hoopercompass.com/Transcribed/HonorableGeorgeSHooperObituary.pdfhttp://www.hoopercompass.com/Transcribed/HonorableGeorgeSHooperObituary.pdf
Although the obit fails to mention any family, this is the same George S. Hooper who was father of Charlotte Ann Hooper that was mentioned long ago in 1999 at http://genforum.genealogy.com/hooper/messages/152.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/hooper/messages/152.html

Soon after G S Hooper's death, the widow [not the mother of Charlotte] Hooper wrote her will. See my transcriptions at http://www.hoopercompass.com/Transcribed/LydiaHooperCatawbaNCWill.pdfhttp://www.hoopercompass.com/Transcribed/LydiaHooperCatawbaNCWill.pdf

Other research has shown the widow was the former Lydia Pratt. When Lydia's brother created his will in Chester Co., SC, in 1846, [see http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/onlinearchives/Thumbnails.aspx?recordId=297325http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/onlinearchives/Thumbnails.aspx?recordId=297325 ]
he appointed George S Hooper as guardian for his son Henry Pratt, who then was under the age of 14.
Perhaps it is significant that J H Ward signed the Hooper death notice AND was named to be executor of Mrs. Lydia Hooper.
