William Howard-Mo.-Tn b.1817/d.1902
Hello Cousins! I have seen my gggrandpa mentioned here before, but nothing too extensive. None have mentioned his ancestors, and only a few his descendants. William Howard was born sometime in 1817 in Mo., Married Elizabeth Jane Henderson in McMinn co. TN, 6-14-1843, moved to Meigs Co. TN and Died in McMinn Co tn in 1902. He was buried in Short Creek cemetery in Athens, TN, the stone doesn't give the dates, but that he was 82 yrs old.
Here is what I have learned in the past few weeks:
William "Pap" Howard was 1/2 Cherokee and 1/2 Black Dutch, meaning he was 3/4 Cherokee and the rest mellungeon. His wife was the daughter of Francis J. Henderson,1800-1845, and Eleanor Pickens Henderson, who at some time had lived in Indiana, as that is where Elizabeth was born. Both of them were full-blooded Cherokee, Making Her a Cherokee as well. Jane, as she was called is buried in Fort Hill cemetery in Cleveland, TN. near both her parents.
The children of William Howard and Jane Henderson:
Martha Ann
James T
George W
Charles
Hilda?/Hulda
Elizabeth or Eliza Jane
John Wesley
Andrew J.
Asberry Sherman
John Wesley Howard b.1857- d.[ ], Married 1. Frances "Fannie" Whiteside 1851-1886 in 1876. Their children:
Fannie
John F
Florence B
william J
Elizabeth "Lizzie" J
James
Charles L
2. Charity Fairs or Farris b. 1867 Missouri-d.1926 in McMinn co. TN Their children:
Ethel
Maggie
Mary
Artie
Ollie
Dolly
Ida Mae
Some records include a Thomas, born 1905- died 1965
but Ollie was my grandmother and no one ever mentioned the name in my life. It was rumored among family that an incestuous relationship between John Wesley and his daughter Lizzie produced three children. I have heard of 2 of them, George, and Margaret. Could it be that Thomas was the Third?
Nearly all the individuals above were buried at Short Creek cemetery. The one exception I can name is Fannie Whiteside who was buried in Lower Spring Creek cemetary in Riceville Tn. I am currently working on this information for my family and have access to other names and dates. I would love to be able to connect my little native american band to anyone above William. Please let me know if you can help.
Also, My Grandmother Ollie married a Rose man, Luther Ervin, born in Mcminn with very Dark features and family links to Cherokee NC. They seemed to have lived In Cherokee County, some say, the reservation itself, but Cherokee proper is in Swain County, and my sources may be skewed. HIs mother was a Dockrey from Bundcombe county and was said to be full cherokee. I don't know if this is completely true, but it makes sense since all of my other relatives were. I know her mother was descended from Mahala Lunsford Dockery and James William Dockery. My main aim here is to find my ancestors but I'd love to find out if there really is a native american link there too. Hope to Hear from You soon.
