WILLIAMS MARY SHANNON went to be with her Lord Friday, December 1, after a brief illness. Mary was born October 17, 1910 in Dallas. She was a long time Irving resident, civic pioneer and founder, and beloved wife, sister, grandmother, and aunt. Mary lived most of her life in Irving and resided in the Juliette Fowler Home in Dallas for the last nine years. Mary's grandparents settled in Irving in 1903, living in tiny Irving in its pioneer days. Her grandfather started the first newspaper in Irving and her uncle, Tom Hudson, chronicled many of the adventures of their time in the area. During WWII, Mary was a pilot and a member fo the Civil Air Patrol. Later, she and her first husband, Pierce Shannon built two home in frontier Irving, one in the current historic district and one on Conflans before Sherwood Forest was developed. Mary lived most of her adult life in Irving. She was a charter member of the Irving Symphony League and co-founder of the Irving Cultural Affairs Council, was a member of the Irving Woman's Club and the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1977 she won the Altrusa Club Woman-of-the-Year Award of community service. Mary is survived bh her husband Charles Williams; two granddaughters, Shannon Pierce and Suzanne Brophy; four nieces, Sally Darling, Rosemary Raley, Liz Joe, and Jane Ladik; one nephew, Harry Royse, five great grandchildren; thirteen great nieces and nephews, and eleven great-grand nieces and nephews. Mary, who was affectionately known as Wowo to her many nieces and nephews, has a zest for living that was contagious. She loved to cook and entertain, and was a gracious and hospitable hostess. Her family was alway her highest priority and we will miss her greatly. Services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Monday, December 4, 2000 at Brown's Memorial Funeral Home in Irving.
