John came to Gorstville, WI, in 1843, then was the first settler in Mazomanie, a single 25-yr old. He came with other members of the British Temperance Emigration Society that started in 1844. By 1855 the village was owned by Hudson & 2 other Englishmen (Wm Robinson & Henry Walker). He built his house in 1849, the year he married Jane STEPHENSON (STEVENSON), who was born in 1830.
About 1863 John moved the house to property near Black Earth Creek purchased from the U.S. Govt. He died in 1865, about 2 years after moving the house. He was considered wealthy w/his real estate valued at $6,250.
