David B. Hukil Civil War Ohio
Hello,
I am a civil war collector & dealer & recently purchased an authenic original civil war muster roll & pay document for the company of Captain Benjamin F. Prentis, Company H of the first Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The document is paying persons in the regiment for the period of April 30, 1862 to August 31, 1862. The document lists 85 names including David B. Hukil, a private who enlisted Oct. 21st, 1861 at Steubenville.
The document appears to be filled out in the hand of the Col. of the 1st Regiment Ohio Vol. Infantry, Ed A. Parrott who signs the following paragraph:
I hereby certify that on the march from Tennessee to Louisville, Ky. at which place the command arrived on the 26th day of September 1862, all of the camp equipage books papers and accounts of this company were by order of Maj.
General Buell, left behind at Bowling Green Ky. and as it is impossible to have access to them I am unable to make up the clothing account for my men at this muster for payment.
Ed A. Parrott
Col. 1st Regt. Ohio Vol. Inftry.
There is also another paragraph signed by Capt. B.F. Prentis and James H. Prentis 2nd Sergent:
We certify in honor that we actually employed the servants for we have received payment for the whole of the time charged and did not during any part of the time employ a soldier as servant. The names of our servants are below - that we are not indebted to the United States in any way whatever. We also certify that we witnessed the payment to the whole company.
B.F. Prentis Capt. Servt. George Grass
James H. Prentis 2nd Sergent name of Servt. Charles Casey
Under "Record of Events which may be necessary or useful for future reference at the war department, or for present information" is written in pen:
Left Corinth June 11th 1862 and encamped at Juba? on the 12th. Left on 14th and passed through Tuscumbia on 17th. Crossed Tennessee River and encamped at Florence on 23rd and lost journal from this date.
I am glad to pass along pictures of this document to descendants. Please e-mail me directly at [email protected]
