This isn't necessarily "help" about your brick wall, but a few of suggestions anyway.
There's a new resource, supposed to be available online (I'm not sure how, or when), called "Family Names of the U.K."It has quite extensive entries under the main spelling Hulin, and many other spellings.I have had a preview of those entries (because I was corresponding with the scholars preparing it), but I can't share it here.It should be available quite soon, if not already, from its creators:http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/cahe/research/bristolcentreforlinguistics/fanuk.aspxhttp://www1.uwe.ac.uk/cahe/research/bristolcentreforlinguistics/fanuk.aspx
Another resource to try if the family you seek is really from St. Briavels (or nearby) is the Forest of Dean Family History Trust. They have lots of records accessible through their website, and a relatively active online discussion forum:www.forest-of-dean.org.uk
Finally, if you can come up with a living male-line candidate with the Hulin (however spelled) surname, Doug Huling and I would welcome him (or his sample) to the surname Y-DNA project we administer at FTDNA:http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hul_n_/http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hul_n_/
