hi holly - thanks for your response
my humeston ancestors did settle in Litchfield (town), Litchfield Co, Ct, and Plymouth (town), Litchfield Co, Ct,is about 7 miles south-east of Litchfield town. This certailny puts both of them in the right part of the world at the right time.
Some of mine moved to New York state, Oneida Co, to a place called Vienna, which again is about 9 miles south-east of Camden. Appears to be little doubt that they knew each other.
From there my gg grandfather Carlyle immigrated to Canada about 1840 (according to census records), through the Cornwall, Ontario area, pretty much due north of Camden. My mother said they came from Dundee (she assumed this was Scotland; however there is a Dundee very close to Cornwall).
From there they moved to the Belleville, Ontario area, wherethey met up with other American ex-pats (Palmer & Latta are 2 of the families married in to).
They next show up on 1861 census in Huron Co, which is not far from Simcoe Co. My gg grandparents are buried in a place called Hensall, Huron Co; I have visited the cemetery & have pictures. By the way, my gg grandmother was a Polly Burris - i have had no luck trackingher down. Further, one of their daughters was named Lydia, born 1834, married to a Thomas Hicks, and buried in an adjacent cemetery.
I have not been able locate Tecumseth in Simcoe Co; however, there is a Temcumseh, in Essex Co, Ontario, a suburb of Windsor, Ontario, just across the border from Detroit. These are all in the same part of the world.
I shall check out Penfields from some of my sources. Perhaps there is a distant connection for us. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Good hunting
Keith Cork
