Jess Willard Hurd, 91, of Kingsport, Sullivan Co TN,
passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November
20, 2012.
Jess was born in Blackwater, VA, on October 5, 1921. He
resided in Kingsport the majority of his life. After a
successful career with TEC, and being a professional
building contractor, Jess went on to serve as founder and
pastor of Trinity Baptist Church. He also served as pastor
of Arcadia Baptist Church for a number of years, and most
recently served as the adult Sunday school teacher at
Friendship Chapel where he was a faithful member.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Flora
Hurd; eight brothers and sisters; a daughter, Judith Lee;
and granddaughter, Bronwen Darnell.
Surviving is his devoted wife of 69 years, Alma Mae Manis
Hurd; two daughters, Margaret (Joe) Herron and Sandra
(James) Gilliam; son, Jeff (Terri) Hurd, all of Kingsport,
TN; grandsons, Brian Darnell, of Brentwood, TN, Alex Hurd,
of Virginia Beach, VA, and Matthew Hurd, of Knoxville, TN;
granddaughters, Loree Fitzgerald and Amy Light, both of
Kingsport, TN; great-grandchildren, Megan, Jess and
McKenzie Darnell, of Brentwood, TN, Peyton and Mollie
Light, of Kingsport, TN, and Hannah Fitzgerald, of Johnson
City, TN.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., on
Friday, November 23, 2012, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home,
520 Watauga Street, Kingsport, TN.
A service will be held at 1 p.m., in the funeral home
chapel with Pastor Joe Hill, officiating. A eulogy will be
given by his son, Jeff.
Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park, Kingsport,
TN. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brian Darnell, Alex
Hurd, Matthew Hurd, and great grandsons, Peyton Light,
Jess Darnell, and best friend, Ron Hill.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to
Friendship Chapel, 300 McKenzie Drive, Kingsport, TN 37660.
Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is serving
the Hurd family.
