I am one of the Canadian Hurtigs (although I now live near San Francisco), and I can shed some light on them for you.
Virtually all are descendents of a handful of Hurtig siblings who emigrated from Romania to Canada around 1900. Several went into the fur business (including my grandfather Max) in Winnipeg.
We're Jewish; it's possible we were descended from Sephardics who fled Spain during the Inquisition, and then acquired the "Hurtig" name while passing through Germany in later times before setting in Romania. (Maybe we were moving "nimbly" and "quickly" through Germany, for obvious reasons.) In other words, it's unlikely that the Canadian Hurtigs (many of whom now live in the States) are related to your Johannes Hurtig, though who knows? It's a big melting pot of a world.
(Incidentally, Mel Hurtig is a first cousin to my Dad, Jack Hurtig.) Hope this helps...
