Origin of Inscoe (including Insko and Inscho) surname
My research traces the Inscoe/Insko, Inscho, Insco, Inscore linage into the 1600's in Staffordshire and Shoupshire in England. In 1998 I visited the area and several English cousins there and subsequently have kept in touch with many of those doing genealogical research.
Some interesting current and historical facts. Almost none were Church of England and olny two or three Catholics which most being Methodist or what was called in prior times nonconfirmist. Many were locksmiths some Coal miners thus the reason a few were in Wales and a few farmers.Still working, in fact today, on old church records.
Family lore in England is that the first Inscoe (spelled in England Inscow and Inskow as well) was a seaman on the Spanisg armada who was washing ashore in Wales and stayed as he was a member of a persecuted minority.
I read a book at the Library of Congress (forgot title) and origins of names and Inscoe was shown as Basque/Phoenician/English. This might in fact support the family lore. There are some similiar Basque surnames and there are a handfull ofInsco's in Isreal.
During the Spanish Inquisition Phoenician Jews were forced
at the threat of execution to convert to the Catholic
Church but many excaped to the upper Northwest corner of Spain inhabited by a Celtic and Basque minority and assimilated there.
Next I had a BYU/Sorenson Development DNA test done. Recognizing that I am 1/4 Inscoe the conclusions can varry but the highest probable geograhic proximity of my ancestors included Western England (not Scotland as some have suggested) and the North West corner of Spain along with Germany and Switzerland (where I do have ancestry) . I do not have any known Spanish ancestry so maybe family lore has some crdiance.
Our direct English origins are reasonably established in old church records.I am currently reviewing old files and hand wriiten notes from 1998 now and found a couple errors which I will correct. English cousins also sent some more information.
My research on Insko and Inscho families is missing some lines but I believe is reasonably complete at least as far a availblee public records exist.Missing In New Jersey a few Inscho's revideces on early land and cemetery records, Some Inscoe's and Inscho's in Ohio and the entire Silas Incko line in Canada.I have chose not to replicate the fine work of Shelby Inscore in her published volumes I, II and III except as I already had them.Added recently the West Virginia Insco clan but I have yet to post.
