Re: Research on the name Island or Illand
You built a very nice genealogy site. Congratulations. I guess the name Island derives from Islam. Your ancestors arrived from Spain and Morocco in the beginning of 8 th century. After Poitiers's battle, they settled in l'Islamière on Mayenne river, pretending to be converted to christian faith and to be heirs of Viking warriors! In fact, they remained faithfull to Mohammed and secretly practised Islam. In Contest Saint-Martin church, they prayed looking towards Mecca, and had a very special smile when Michel Barré, a very pious christian knight, tried to guide them on the path of true roman catholical faith. After the mass, instead of going to the Aucherie bar with ordinary villagers, they had their own private ceremonies in a special subterranean passage, under the nuns' house, which was, in fact, their secret mosk (and probably harem). I hope to have helped you solve this long lasting enigma of a strange rebel tribe in the country of Jean Chouan.
