Re: Island Family Origins
My great grandmother, Mary Island was born in Ireland about 1838. She emigrated to Canada and later married Alexander Arnold. They settled in the town of Ivy in Simcoe County, Ontario. My father always said there was a scandinavian connection to the Island name. I found quite a few Islands in Norway. Since we know that the Norsemen invaded Ireland around 700 AD, I think perhaps the name may have originated in Norway.
