Rev. Greene Adams performed the marriage of Mark James and Angelina Morris, May 11. 1833, Sussex Co. VA.
Does anyone have this couple in their tree? If so, do you have further for Mark James? Was he Mark C. James originally of Brunswick Co. VA. Was Angelina Morris a descendant of Thomas Morris of Brunswick Co. VA?
Will be happy to share what I have for Thomas Morris and for Mark James.
Then we also have Moland James that married Catherine Harris 22 Dec. 1810 Sussex Co. Surety John Birdsong. P. 138
The Birdsongs were also Godparents for the children of both Emanuel and Sarah James of Sussex Co. and also for Abner James and wife Mary. Abner James' will was written 11 Oct. 1773 and Probated 21 April 1774 Sussex Co. VA.
Abner James was married atleast twice per will:
Son John James 5 shillings. Son Thomas James asked to live with his mother (stepmother?) for four years from this date, to work for her and assist in bringing up her children (not named). Son Samuel James 5 shillings. Daughter Molly James 5 shillings. Wife Mary James. Exor: Wife. Wit: Mitchell Boothe and Phillip Boothe
Please note children by Abner and second wife Mary:
Albemarle Parish Register:
Abner and Mary James: Eliz. 9/16/1762 Wm. Brown, Mary Stacy, Mary Birdsong Lucy 7/14/1764 Thos. Brown, Patience Porch, Sarah Johnson Enos9/9/1771 Henry Blow, Mic'h Moore, Mary Birdsong
Note: William Birdsong was also a godparent for William James, son of Emanuel and Sarah who was christened Albemarle Parish 10/27/1751 along with Wm. Judkins and Eliz. Ellis.
Also, Emanuel and Sarah's son Emanuel christened 11/1/1745 had godparents: Nathaniel James, Joseph Rogers and Martha Davis.
Nathaniel James is in several deeds along with those of Emanuel James in Surry Co. VA.
Emanuel James 1779 Rent Role, Sussex Co. VA
My main interest is in William James above, his brother Edwin James christned 1/29/1754 Albemarle Parish with godparents: Simon Stacey, Wm. Ellis, Lydia Proctor. and their sister Martha James christened 2/22/1761 with godparents: John Jones, Rebecca Gibbons and ____ Stacey.
1782 Census Surry Co. VA: Enos James6- Jeremiah James64
Sussex Co. VA was formed from Surry Co. in 1753.Thus, 13 Sep. 1751 when John Proctor and wife sold lands in Surry Co. to John Spratley on the South side of Cypress Swamp and bounded by the Spring Branch, the land bounded NATHANIEL JAMES along with the Stewarts and Marriotts. Thus, I believe at that time the James land was in Surry Co. and later became Sussex.
There are several of the James family between Surry, Sussex and Brunswick Counties of VA.In fact, I've read in the past week that somehow an Edward James was the brother of Emanuel James of Sussex Co.I can say I have found NO Edward James in the Sussex Co. records so far. All that I seem to see in the NC records is that these James came out of PA.This is not the case with these of Surry Co. as they were originally in York Co. VA. There must be several James out there that simply can't make their ancestor's connections judging by what I have read.
I will be happy to work with any of you who have James of Surry or Sussex Co. Va through Brunswick and Greensville Counties. I have read so much about Edwin James being over in NC yet we have a later Edwin James in Sussex Co. in the 1830 Census. Was he of Emanuel's line, Abners or Nathaniels? Was the will of Emanuel James 1785 Sussex Co. that of Emanuel Sr. or Emanuel Jr.?
The children of Emanuel with wife Sarah in thechristenings of Albemarle Parish simply do not match the six children in the will of Emanuel James 1785 Sussex Co. VA.
I do have (I believe) Martha James of the Emanuel and Sarah James of Albemarle Parish Christnings along with her brother William James in the proprotion of slaves in Brunswick Co. VA 1802. I do believe this Martha married Christoher Mason Jr. of Brunswick co. VA. Then Christopher and Martha named their son Edwin Mason.Edwin is not a Mason name.
