Dear Jaye,
I try my best to help sort out what I consider to be a lot of Jarrett - Hicks/Hix - Graham confusion.
Known Hicks/Hix Jarrett facts.
1.Hicks siblings all listed on the Rev. War statemnet of Mordecai Hicks filed in 1835 in Monroe county by Susanna Jarrett his sister. Names the following siblings - 1.Moredecai Hicks-2. Susannah Jarrett - 3.William Hicks(long since dead) - 4.Richard Hicks - 5.Elizabeth Johnson - 6.Nancy(last name not stated - 7.Sarah(Last name not stated) - 8.Catherine Skaggs. Mordecai's claim was based on the statement of William Dequassie. He did not give the married names of Sarah & Nancy. He stated that William was long since dead.
We know for a fact that all of the Hicks siblings were married in Greenbrier co. by the Rev. John Alderson. (here again we have some confusion as the Rev. John Alderson was before he came to Greenbrier in Rockingham Co. Va. and many people claim all his marriages for Rockingham.) This would be one huge mistake.
Fact there are deeds in Kanawha Co. between David Jarrett & William & Hannah Hicks.
Fact the families of Jarrett - Graham - Hicks(Hix) - Skaggs - Griffith all have early land records located on Wolf Creek.
I believe that a lot of this confusion come several sources 1.History of Summers County W.Va. - This book gives an accounting of the Graham Family. Pages 363 thru. 374 mainly. This has mountain's of Graham Jarrett Marriages in it.
These book pages and Oren Morton's History of Monroe County drove me nut's for several years. Untill several years ago I decided to put it aside and sort out the Graham family with other sources.
I decided to start with the earliest Graham I could find. All the history books claim that are oldest Graham's are Scoth - Irish.
1. Joseph Grahan was a State Senator from Washington Co. Va.. in his biography it states that his grandfather Robert Graham came from Northern Ireland before the Rev. War. and setled in North Carolina near Guilford Courthouse. Being so harrassed by tories be removed to Wythe Co. Va. Joseph claimed that he spent much time with his uncle David Graham.
2.North Carolina Graham's linked to the Virginia Grahams.
3.There is a grave in the Thyatira Church Cem. about ten miles west of Salisbury, Rowan County North Carolina.
Inscription reads-- Here Lys the Body of James Graham who departed this life February 1st 1758 aged 88 years.
4.Statement of James Ramsey son of Dr. James Graham Ramsey says that this James Graham was the ancestor of all the Rowan Co.N.C. Grahams and he came directly from Scotland.
Other books that claim this James came from Scotland are. (Lingle's History and Prohept of Zion, & Parmassus by Hurley& eagans.)
This James Graham was already an old man when he reached N.C. . All of the History books of the area state that he came with his son James and that James the son brought his 3sons, James- John - William and pos. a 4th son Fergus with him..
Raliegh N.C states that the 1st Graham on record of any spelling is James Graham with land grants on Cold Water Creek in Anson Co. (Now Rowan) There are 3 of them for him with the follwing dates.
June 24, 1751. March 26, 1752, May 21, 1754.
this James Graham Born 1670 Died 1758 would have been 81 to 84 years old at the times they were recorded. Several people believe that it was his son James who would have recorded these grants.
Rev.Thomas Lingle's History of Thyatiria Church gave the following statement. That James Grahm was an elder when the church was organized and was born in Scotland in 1695 in the land of Knox and Chalmers. Further states that he grew tired of tyranny and opression and set sail for the land of freedom. And James died in 1782. (So this would be the son James Sr.in this listing)
1759 Tax List of Rowan Co. N.C. Lists a David Jarrett. So Here we have one David Jarrett in the same county as the oldest known Graham.
One thing is for certain that the Graham's in Rowan Co. N.C. and or early Gramham in Va. are the same family.
The Summers Co. W.Va. History page 368 states that John Graham was the ancestor in this country, and that his children were Lancelot(Lanty - John - James - Robert - Elizabeth - Ann - Rebecca - Florence. Page 368 - 369 State that David Graham Sr. & James Graham Sr. who settled at Lowell(Greenbrier) were brothers and that another brother settled at Fort Chiswell in Wythe Co. Va.
Augusta Co. Va. Records
1.May 19, 1749 John Graham Petions for relief of Jane Graham widow of William Graham.
2.Aug. 29, 1751 John Graham appointed guardian of David & James Graham orphans of William Graham.
From the time these two entries were made we know that John & William Graham (Brothers) were in Augusta Co. Va. and at the same time either James Graham Sr. Or James the 2nd recorded the land grants inNorth Carolina.
Oren Morton in the History of Monroe Co. Page 346 lists the Graham family. children of James Born 1741 and his wife (1st cousin) Florence Lists Childrenone of them being a dau. Jane (Born 1774)who married David Jarrett.
This is def. not the older David Jarrett of Greenbrier/ Monroe/kanawha. As this Jane (Graham) Jarrett and her husband David are buried in Ky with one huge stone that reads.
David Garred Oct. 30, 1771 - Dec. 13, 1839
Jane Graham Garred Sept. 14, 1774 - Jan. 13, 1853. According to Lawrence Co. Ky History books the large tombstone was brought in on a river boat and the spelling was mispelled from Jarrett - to Garred and would have been to much of an expense to have it changed. His family bible record'ss all his children with the last named spelled as Jarrett.
I believe that this David Jarrett is one David Jarrett son of David Jarrett Sr. and his 1st wife Jane (Graham) Griffith. Yet another much older Jane Graham Griffith.
I'll get back to you with more.
