Two John A Jasper s in SC?
Apparently there was a John Andrew Jasper and a John Abraham Jasper. This is where everyone is getting befuddled. One, John Abraham, came from Carmarthen, Wales in 1749 bringing with him a son Abraham, and was married to a Mary. Apparently, his oldest son, born in Wales became a Tory as family tradition holds. However, the other sons faught on the American side. The other man,of the same time period supposedly was a John Andrew Jasper from Virginia.
Prior to statehood in 1792, Kentucky was part of Virginia and I was told that in order to get Kentucky land, one must become a resident of Virginia. My Nicholas Jasper line came from South Carolina through Augusta, Virginia into Kentucky. They were in Union section 45 in the 1790 cnesus, within a few houses of his father John Jasper, but were in Kentucky by 1808, when my third gg married Betsy Baker. Nicholas'father John Abraham Jasper died in 1799 in South Carolina.Nicholas was named in his father's will.Nicholas was the first sheriff of Pulaski County Kentucky.
In 1978 I visited with a professor in Lexington, Ky.He had written down his great grandmother's history. She said that the Jaspers, Garners, and Coopers came from South Carolina at the same time.
It seems that both lines are claiming the same children. My line claims Wales as its origin, not England via Virginia.
My line goes to Nicholas who was named, with living siblings in his father's will.I have seen no public record or church record, or ship record to verify before the will of 1799.
There is a history of Charleston SC written earlier in the 1900s that I have seen, which suggests John Abraham Jasper was married to a Mary, (possibly Henrdon) but no claim, just a suggestion. It also listed the possible sons and daughters and their spouses.Again, the claims were that they were not able to prove all of the information.Virginia had very good records for that time frame.I would like to see actual church records, wills, war records, or court records verifying that John Andrew Jasper was in deed the father of Abraham, Nicholas, John, Rachel, Anna, Hannah, Charity, Elizabeth, Mary and William. That he was the same person as John Abraham, who wrote the will. Some genealogy include both middle names. This is a mess and will require some deep research to straighten out.
