Gemes in Missouri or Arkansas.
I am looking for a Gemes that would have been in Missouri or Arkansas around 1845, probably the Eureka Springs Area. According to family legent, Lem Gemes was the son of a Cherokee Indian woman named Ann Gray and a man named Gemes. His father died or moved when he was born and he adopted his step father's name. When he married, he took his biological father's name back. Below is his obit...
L. P. Gemes passed away December 5 1932, at the home of his L.W. Gemes, at Edwards at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 5 days. He was born in Douglas County, Missouri, May 30th 1845. At the age of 21 years he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Borthe, who died twelve years ago. To this union were born ten children: Sarah Cardwell, Warsaw; John Gemes, Kansas City; Bell Poston, Springfield' Mary Etta, deceased; Minty Davis, L. W. Gemes and A.A. Gemes of Edwards; Delphia Frye, Sedalia; Bessie Dickson, Marshall and Jessie Gemes of Fristoe. He united with the Freewill Baptist Church at the age of 17 years and lived a devoted Christian life until death. He is also survived by 37 grand children and 25 great grandchildren. He was laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery December 7th.
Who is LP Gemes' father? Any info on this is appreciated.
