Origin of Jenkins name

By Dan Jenkins June 24, 2005 at 11:15:53

The name of Jenkins was originally expressed as Janekyn at the beginning of the naming period . It is of Nordic origins via Flanders and the Frisian Isles. Many Flemish people came with William of Normandy and the stock of these people as well as the Normans originated in the Frisian Isles and lands of North Germany and are of the same peoples as the Vikings , Angles, Saxons and Jutes. During the subjugations of the native Welsh Britons many Flemish mercenaries were used and Flemish weavers were brought into England to settle the areas around the Welsh borders. There was intermarrying and the Jenkins name grew quite fast in Wales. There is no J in the Welsh tonque and a son or relative of John [as the name implies ] would have been expressed differently. The Janekyn name was numerous in Oxfordshire , Somerset, Charing Cross, Sussex and Kent from early 1200s onward. In Kent, where my ancestors came from it later changed to Jankyn , largley in Rochester area . When these Jankyns moved into middle and Southern Kent to the Weald and Folkstone area it was changed again to Jenkyn in the 1400s. By mid 1500s it was Jenken,Genkin , Genken,Jenkin. By 1600 it was now completed to Jenkins. My family research goes back to these times and my DNA points to the nordic origin and my Kent Jenkins could have arrived as early as 450 with first Jute invasions. My haplogroup is R1a1 , while Welsh Jenkins mostly belong to haplogroup R1b, which is the most common in Western Europe with their roots being from Spain, France , and the mideast. To determine which origins apply to you , you have to find out where your ancestors were from. Most Jenkins in theMiddle Atlantic and Southern regions are from immigrants from Wales, while in the Northeast most are from Central and Southern , England. I have accumulated info. on both groups of Jenkins and will help you if I can , just drop me a note by e-mail.Dan Jenkins
