Johnakin and Journigan

By genealogy.com user February 23, 2002 at 02:45:59

Some of the Census records lend credence to the proposition that Johnakin is a derivative of Journigan.I am African American and a descendant of a bi-racial woman named Tommie Jane Johnakin. (I've seen different variations of it)On the 1900 Census for Marlboro County South Carolina, she is listed with her husband Benjamin McCrae and two daughers. Also living in the household is an Emily Journigan, black, 13 years of age.I am certain this is a relative of Tommie Jane's.How Journigan became Johnakin is unclear, although I can see how those not knowing how to read and write could have gotten it confused.Perhaps this occurred in both black and white families. From another message posted by Grant Johnston the misspelling may have originated in families who were of bi-racial descent.
