My Johnikin branch is from Bennettsville, South Carolina. My Great-Great Grandmother was Tommie Jane Johnikin (1874-1962)I too see quite a number of variations in the spelling of the name.It is said Tommie Jane who was listed as black on these census records was of mixed ancestry.Family tradition holds she was mullato or descended from Indians. Her father, Anson Johnikin was born in 1839 in South Carolina, but the 1900 Census reveals his father was born in North Carolina and his mother was from Maryland.Where in North Carolina have you found a concentration of Johnikins?I have seen the name also spelled Jonican, Johnnigan, Janikin and Johniken. To be honest I'm not sure how Tommie Jane spelled hersYou may email me at [email protected]

Thanks,

Geneen
