ours spell it JOHNIKEN
Our family name seems to have evolved from Jernigan in Misssissippi. Effy BLACKWELL m. Harris JERNIGAN ca 1855 in Jasper Co. Harris disappears from the records after one child is born, apparently killed or missing in the WBTS.
Effy is on the census in 1866 as Effy JOURNIGAN, then, starting in 1870, as Effy JOHNIKEN. On every census she is a widow and illiterate, which probably explains the changing surname. It was JERNIGAN, then JOURNIGAN, then JOHNIKEN.
Effy cntinued to have children, including William Thomas JOHNSTON, b. 1865 and Albert Gallitan JOHNSTON, b. 1867. The father of the two JOHNSTON's is identified as Wash JOHNSTON and living near-by is George Washington JOHNSTON, a married man who goes by the name Wash.
Beginning in 1870 all Effy's children were given the surname JOHNIKEN. She had Burkett Laster (Lassiter)JOHNIKEN, known as Bragg, in 1870. Three other boys were born including Levi. The entire family moved to DeSoto Parish, LA about 1890 - 1900.
