Stephanie,
Elizabeth Nichols was the daughter of Mary A. King Nichols Carr and an unknown Nichols father. She is listed in the 1850 Washington,FL census under the name CARR, living with her mother, younger sister, Zilpha, and younger brother John Jefferson Nichols (my gr gr grandfather) and her grandfather, William King. Also living with her are her two younger half-sisters, Martha Jane Carr and Sara Adaline Carr.
I suspect due to stong circumstantial evidence that Elizabeth's father was related to Elias Nichols (1790 SC) and his wife, Zilpha, most likely by one of their sons, William or Elias Jr. Notice that Elizabeth named a son Elias and a daughter Zylpha. Elias and Zilpha were also living in Washington, FL in 1850, just a few doors away from Mary A Carr (Eliz's mother). Family legend says that Mary King Nichols Carr was an Indian (I believe half Indian is more likely) and that the Nichols children were illegitimate. This would explain why they do not show up in either William's or Elias' family trees.I am trying to find an Elias descendant who will take a DNA test for me to either prove or disprove this.
I have more information if you would like to contact me at [email protected].
