There were two Johnson/ Johnston families in Ross in the early 1800s. The family of Bailey Johnson and Hanna Moffit came from Whiteley, Greene, Pennsylvania. Bailey had served in the American Revolution for Virginia. His offsprings are listed at Roots.
Bailey's brother Alexander may have also come to Ross but that has no documentation that I have found. But Alexander's sons are probably the Simon and Thornton that you mentioned related to the 1820 census of Ross.

I am searching for the James Johnston that married a Delilah Gates 1833 Nov 11 in Ross, Ohio. Delilah might be the Delilah Acton that first married Bailey Gates (Daily Gaits). Bailey and Delilah were in the 1820 census of Ross.
