I am descended from Mattie Johnston from Carroll Co., MS d/o Jesse Johnston who I understand is the son of Gilbert Johnston who lived in Horry Co., SC and then Warren Co., MS (died there c. 1824).
Do you have anything to connect these people to the Gilberts of your post? Someone online gave me the name of Jesse's father as Gilbert and his father as Gilbert, but nothing so far to document that. I did find a probate record in Warren Co., in which Gilbert's wife Mary and Jesse Johnston were administrators. I do not have all the information, since the Archives library was closing just as I found it. Just have to go back next week. At quick glance there was nothing identifying him as a son or any mention of other children. Just paying bills, collecting debts, selling land and a set aside of a dower. Somewhere there has to be a distribution of the remaining assets.
Jessie b. 1796 m. in 1838 to Levincy or Levenia Bole b. 1808 or 1818 in Warren Co.She was married earlier to Miles Barefield who died soon after. Interesting after reading your history. Early census records show a possible earlier wife for Jesse.
There was also a Jesse Johnston, Jr. in Warren Co. at the same time.
Jesse and Levenia (Levincy) moved to Carroll Co., MS in 1830's.
I will be glad to share what I have if this is the same family.
