Hi Maria,
Yes, the family name began in the village of Westzaan, northwest of Amsterdam. We are mentioned in land surveys back in 1595, by that name.
The first person to actually register the name as a family name in the church record books was Cornelus, son of Pieter, so he is Cornelus Pieterszoon Jongewaard.
He is buried in the local church, Sint Joris Kirk. He was a rich man, so he could afford to be buried inside the church, in the floor!
He owned the local inn, called De Prins (The Prince), and had 18 children, 5 of whom have descendents alive today.
