Re: Jordans of Elbert & Hart Counties
Mark, Obedience White Jordan's father was Luke White born c.1765 in Edgcombe County,NC and died 1837 at Bowman, Elbrt County,Georgia. I don't know who his wife was, but his parents were John White c.1835-1804 and Ann(maiden name unknown)c.1835-1810 of Edgecombe County,NC. I claim John Jordan of Elbert and Madison County,Georgia as James' father. John Jordan and Luke White had adjoining property at the time James and Obedience were married and I think it is significant that James named his second son John. It was tradition in the old south to frequently name the first born son after the paternal grandfather, but James obviously broke from tradition and named his first son after his brother-in-law, Stephen White. I hardly have a "smoking gun" regarding the relationship between John and James, but I have poured over the extensive Jordan records compiled by Ron Holley several years ago and John seems to me to be by far the most likely father of James.
