I haven't done any postings in some time so I thought I would try again.
First of all, I am African American. My great grandmother was Pearl Judkins. She lived with my great grandfather outside of Montgomery, AL.We didn't know much about her because she died when my grandfather was about five years old.All we had was some names and a single portrait.
Anyway ... I ended up checking census records and confirmed what I had heard. Her parents were Anderson and Nora Judkins.(I don't know Nora's maiden name.)My father recently visited with a niece of Pearl's.She said that the family called Anderson "the Englishman."She stated that this was because he was white. The census records I read indicated that he was colored.Either the census records are incorrect, or (the more likely I think) he was of a mixed background.
I am planning to hit census records again in the near future. In the meantime I thought there might be a chance that someone out there has more information that could help me. I do distinctly remember that there were not a lot of Judkins families within the Alabama census records.
