John, I have done extensive research on the southern Jerkins line - who appear early on in the area to which you refer.
You have hit on a situation that I refer to as the Jerkins/Judkins Connundrum. It is clear that in the 1700s and early 1800s, this family pronounced its name in such a way that it could be recorded by one clerk as Jerkins and by the next at Judkins. I actually have one man who appears in the marriage record as a Judkins - but when he divorced the lady several years later (1833) as a Jerkins.
I will check my notes and see what I can find - off the top of my head, I do remember a Richard Judkins/Jerkins in the church records of Washington, NC. But I do not recall the details.
