I'm just beginning to research "our" family tree again, and this post (Kahlers in NY) seemed good spot to start.

My dads name is Richard J Kahler, born Auburn NY 1929

My Grandfathers name was Charles Kahler

My Great Grandfather's name was Karl Kahler (or Kohler w/ the two dots over the o )

The best I can do as far as this family tree goes, is that my great grandfather (Karl Kohler) came to US approx 1889 from Hinzweiler germany.
