Hello Magda! My Great grandfather came to America circa 1905 or 1906 with his parents and 2 brothers. The family information I have is very little, and I am desperately seeking any leads... I do not believe they ever became citizens, so no paper trail there- I have his birth certificate, written in Cyrillic, had it translated, and here is what I've got:
His name was Zigmund Karczewski, son of Andrzej (or Andrje)and Luduik (maiden name Chlebowski)born in the village of Smolyarne, County Kalishkaya, District Konintskiy, Ward Lihent, Born Oct.13, 1896.
Oral family history tells it that they lived in (what was then)Belarus, his father, Andrzej was a detective for the Czar, heard of the coming revolution, and escaped with the family. They were in Chicago for a brief time, and then settled in Connecticutt. They all changed their last names to Koski, and my gr.grandfather changed his to William Z. Koski, his father changed to Andrew, his mother to Lucy, and his two brothers to Steve and Harry (one of the brothers, Steve I believe, died young, in the 1950's). I do not know the brother's names before the change. I cannot find what boat they sailed on, nor naturalization papers for any of them. My mother recalls asking my gr. grandfather to go vote with her in the early sixties, and he said he could not, he was not a citizen. He passed away in Aug. 1964.
That's what I've got! I hope there is something there that we can help each other in our searches!!!Best of luck! Melissa
