William Warren KEA -vs.- Warren KEY, Jr. & Frances D. FLANDERS - Emanuel Co., GA
This deals with the husband of Frances D. Flanders. This is the information I have in my file:
WILLIAM WARREN KEY was born 1834 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died August 02, 1862 in Virginia. He married (1) ELIZA JANE DRAKE Abt. 1855 in Georgia, daughter of FRANCES DRAKE and SELINA KING.She was born July 10, 1834 in Georgia, and died December 29, 1856 in Georgia. He married (2) FRANCES DELILAH FLANDERS in Georgia, daughter of JOHN FLANDERS and NANCY SUMNER.She was born May 16, 1836 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died September 20, 1894.NOTE: I have found W. W. KEY listed as William Warren and Warren William KEY or KEA.
The Warren Key family of Emanuel County, Georgia has many postings on the internet. Many written histories also exist on the Key/Kea family and almost 100% list Warren Key, Jr. (b. 1814) as the husband of Frances. This would have made Warren Key, Jr. 48 years old when he died at Antietam.
Warren KEY, Jr. did not die in the Civil War, at least not in military service. The National Park Service and National Archives have two Confederate soldiers listed by the name of Warren Key. One is William Warren KEA and the other is Warren Reuben KEY of the 1st Regt., Miss. Inf. (State Troops). William Warren died on 2 August 1862 in Virginia. Warren Reuben was alive at discharge. So when did Warren KEY, Jr., son of Warren Key, Sr., disappear? Where did he disappear to? Why do researches list him as the wife of Frances D. Flanders? No records of a Warren Key, Jr. exist after 1840.
A look at the 1850 & 1860 census and the marriage records of Emanuel County, Georgia, gives us a clue as to the real husband of Frances D. Flanders. The 1850 census lists Warren, age 17, in the household of Nancy Key (Wife of Warren Key, Sr.).The 1860 census lists W.W. Kea 26 and Frances D. Kea 22.The Emanuel County Marriage Book B, page 40 lists Warren W. Kea marriage to Frances D. Flanders on 25 Sept. 1859. The record of an Emanuel County company in the 48th Georgia Volunteer Infantry lists William W. Kea as a member. His record reads in part: Kea, William W. - private March 4, 1862. Died August2, 1862. (Born in 1834.) Henderson, vol v; p. 172.
I hope you have some input on this subject. If I am wrong –then I am wrong, but once a mistake has been published it is hard to make changes. I have made many in the past and only wish I could take them back. Nice to type to you,
