Ruth Kellam Bowman Phillips
LIBERTY - Mrs. Ruth Kellam Bowman Phillips, formerly of Liberty, passed away at Liberty Commons Health and Rehabilitation of Burlington on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012.
Mrs. Phillips was born on July 25, 1916 in Guilford County to her parents, Samuel Martin and Jessie Louisa Oliver Kellam, now deceased. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Willard Bowman and H. L. Phillips; her brothers, Harvey Kellam and Roy Kellam; and her sisters, Edna Roberson, Esther Isley and Ada Ridge.
Ruth retired from Levi Straus. She was a life time member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Kimesville where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Mary Millaway Circle and the Faulkner Fellowship Senior Citizen Group. She was also a member of the Kimesville Auxiliary Fire Department.
Mrs. Phillips was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was loved and respected by her family and friends. Survivors include her daughter, Irene Gibson (Lester) of Burlington; sons, Robert Bowman (Betty) of Liberty and Tony Bowman (Doris) of Florida; grandchildren, Steve Bowman (Connie), Susie Eudy (Bob), Anita Gibson, Beth Day (Kenny), Chris Bowman (Michelle), Dean McBride (Maria) and Sabrina Chrisco (Terry); great-grandchildren, Jennifer Gammon (Ross), Haley Day, Reagan Day, Ryan Day, Ashley McBride, Justin King and Madison Bowman; one great-great grandchild, Colton Gammon; and sister, Agnes Kellam. She is also known as "Mama Ruth" by her extended family who includes Bobby Godwin and Joe Phillips (Joyce), all of Fayetteville, Doris Ware and Jack Phillips, both of Reidsville, and Don Phillips (Patsy) of Greensboro. There are several grandchildren and great grandchildren in her extended family. Within her extended family, she was preceded in death by Dovella Fogleman and Willard Bowman, Jr.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Kimesville on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 by the Rev. Chuck Halipilias. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Other times they will be at the home of the grandson, Steve Bowman, 4005 Harper Trail, Burlington, N.C.
