Y-DNA1-37 results have been posted for kit 200693, Billy Kenneth Kemp.Again, we believe Bill Kemp and I are descended from Henry B. Kemp through his son Murphy Kemp and grandson Burrell Kemp Jr.
*********************************************************
Murphy Kemp (21 March 1770 – 1851/1860) [1820 USC] [1830 USC] [1840 USC] [1850 USC]. Born in Granville/Wake Co., NC, and married Sarah/Sally Seay/See (22 Apr. 1775 - <1825).They emigrated to, lived and passed in Smith Co., TN.[NOTE: There is an outside chance that Sarah’s wife’s maiden name was Baird, not Seay.]Their ten children were:
1) Henry Kemp (1790/1796 - ~1823), born in Wake Co., NC, and died in Smith Co., TN, married Rachel Unknown (~1785 - ~1870) [1850 USC/IAR], born in NC and died in Stone Co., AR, before 1814.
2) Jinks/Jenks/Jenkins Kemp (27 Jan. 1792 – 20/27 Aug. 1840) [1820 USC] [1840 USC], died in Smith Co., TN, married Lucretia (Lucrecy) Harper(27 Jan. 1797 – 26/29 Apr. 1844) [1820 USC] [1840 USC], daughter ofMatthew and Martha Patricia (Patsy) Loving Hickerson Harper, born and died in Smith Co., TN, 29 Mar. 1812.[There is confusion as to whether Lucretia was a product or her mother’s first marriage, to Capt. John Henry Hickerson (~1755 – ~1791) of Fauquier Co., VA, or of her mother’s second marriage to Matthew Harper (~1749 - ~1807) of NC.Patsy’s and John’s children were: William Loving Hickerson (18 June 1784 – 24 Aug. 1860), John A. Hickerson (~1786 - ?), Isaac B. Hickerson (~1788 - ?) and Tabitha Hickerson (~1790 - ?).Patsy’s and Matthew’s children were Lucretia Harper (~1798 – 9 Apr. 1844), Elizabeth Harper (24 June 1803 – 19 Nov. 1866) and Betsy Ruth Harper (~1806 – 11 Oct. 1862).Martha Patricia (Patsy) Loving was born 23 Apr. 1767 in NC and was a widow when she married Matthew Harper. The 1820 census records support Lucretia’s father being Matthew Harper. All of Patsy’s children were born in Smith Co., TN.]Jinks and Lucretia had 13 children.
3) Burrell/Burwell Kemp Jr. (7 Apr. 1794 - 1883)[1840 USC] [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] [1880 USC], born in Wake Co., NC, married 1) Elizabeth (Smith ?) Rowland/Roveling/Rawlings/Rowlings/Romling/Romeling (1795/1796 – ~1873) [1840 USC] [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC], born in Wake Co., NC, on 3 Nov. 1813 in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN. By 1814 they were living in Old Kemp Hollow #1, on Peyton's creek, near Monoville, Smith Co., TN, on a land grant from NC in Indian Territory.Burrell was a farmer, both Burrell and Elizabeth were able to read, though their ability to write is unclear. (Richardson, Sarah (Sally), Kissiah, Elizabeth and Rebecca Rowland were siblings, possibly children of Sarah Rowland.)They had nine sons (possibly a tenth died in childhood) and up to six daughters, but the daughters are presently unknown. After Elizabeth’s demise in the early 1870s, Burrell Jr. married 2) Jane/Jennie (Kennedy?) Russell (~1828 - ?) [1880 USC] on 27 Sep. 1874 [SCTMR] by E. J. Yeaman, J.P.; there were no issue from this union. Jane Russell is likely Jane Kennedy, daughter of Stephen Kennedy and widow of Edward Russell.
4) Tabitha Kemp (25 Aug. 1800 – 1883) [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1880 USC] married 1) Jesse Lankford (19 Mar. 1796 – 1826), born in Granville Co., NC, the son of Parish and Sarah Lawrence Lankford, ~1814, and had 5 children. After Jesse died while rafting logs in the Cumberland River in the Defeated Creek area, she married 2) William Canada/Cannady/Canaday/Kennadey/Kennedy (~1785 – 1850/1860) [1850 USC] as his second wife between 1830-1837 and had 3 more children. She died in Smith Co., TN.Jesse’s body was never recovered.
5) Nancy Kemp (1 Apr 1801 - ~1880) [1850 USC] [1880 USC/MTN], born in Greenville Co., NC, married Edward West (~1797 - 1865) [1850 USC] [1860 USC/MTN], born in Hunting Creek, Halifax Co., VA, and son of Elder Miles F. and Lucy Parker West, ~1829 in Smith Co., TN.Edward was a tobacco farmer.Nancy and Edward are interred in the Dickens Cemetery, Macon Co., TN.

7) Lucy Kemp (9 Feb 1809 - ?)
8) John Wilson Kemp (22 Apr 1812 - ~1867) [1840 USC] [1850 USC] [1860 USC] (Bill Kemp’s ancestor on his mother's side) , born, lived and died in Difficult, TN, married Judith/Judah Pankie/Pankey (29 June 1812 – 8 Feb. 1900) [1850 USC] [1860 USC] [1870 USC] in Difficult, Smith Co., TN, ~1832.Judith was the daughter of Ozyeah/Uzyeah/Uzzi and Sarah (Sallie) Kirby Pankey.Elizabeth (Ellis Beverly Kemp’s wife), Dorothia (Wm. In the Tennessee State Archives, for Jackson County, in 1837, in a Petition from Jackson County, praying for an amendment to Make a New County, Jacob's name appears as one of the signers.Jackson County lies adjacent to Smith.Later on in the year 1837, he moved with his family to Bradley County, accompanying his parents who also moved there. He was one of the pioneer settlers in the Ocoee District, which had been opened up by the removal of the Cherokee Indians. Charlotte and Jacob had 12 children.
10) Sarah (Sallie) Kemp (15 June 1819 - <1880) [1850 USC/JTN] [1860 USC/JTN] married John Craighead (~1813 – 1880<) [1850 USC/JTN] [1860 USC/JTN] [1880 USC/JTN], born in Jackson Co., TN, son of Shelton Craighead (Craghead) (1775 VA - 1823 TN) ~1835.Shelton and brother Peter emigrated from Franklin Co., VA with their widowed mother.Sallie and John are interred in the Cub Creek Cemetery in Jackson Co., TN.
In August 2004, Lavon Lankford wrote to Gary Pace:
"Murphy Kemp lived on Defeated Creek at least from 1811-1830. The 1811 deed I believe was for property on Lankford Branch or across the gap to the South on what is now Hwy 85 about 1 mile west of the entrance to Defeated Creek Park. It will take just a bit more title search to precisely locate. Census of 1830 reveals Elder Miles West, Murphy Kemp, and Tabitha Lankford (daughter of Murphy and widow of Jesse) as neighbors. Elder West is buried in what is now known as Lankford Cemetery and his home at the time was located at the Northeast corner. In Census of 1840 I believe Murphy Camp is Murphy Kemp living near Burrel across the ridge on Peyton Creek. I believe Solomon and Henry lived on Sloan Branch of Payton Creek (more title searching). I only have to search titles forward to the 1960s since I know first hand who owned most tracts at that time.
Peyton Creek Baptist in the early days was located across the Creek from the mouth of what is now Hackett Hollow aka Centerpoint Hollow on a farm now owned by Bonnie Kemp's sons."
