Obituary
John Kirk, son of John and Jane Irwin Kirk, was born at Sterling Cetner, Cayuga county, N.Y., Sept., 17th, 1820, being one of a family of six boys and two girls.At the age of 13 he commenced carrying mail, making the trip on horseback, and for a number of years drove a four-horse stage coach from Auburn to Oswego.On the 1st of June, 1846, he was united in marriage with Martha Ray of Victory, N.Y., and to this union were born four girls, Mary E., Nettie, Ella and Jane.In October, 1855, he with his family came to Paw Paw township and engaged in farming.
January 30th, 1880, the wife and mother was called to rest after an illness of several years.Oct. 5, 1905, death claimed the second daughter, Nettie (Mrs. D.W. Woodward) of Chicago.June 27, 1910, death again entered the family and removed Jane, the youngest daughter.
About 23 years ago Mr. Kirk located at East Paw Paw, wehre he lived till he was called to his rest, April 2, 1911, at the ripe age of 90 years, 6 months and 16 days.Mr. Kirk leaves to mourn their loss, three brothers, Wm. of Jewell, Ia., Robert of Shell Rock, Ia., and Aaron of Auburn, N.Y., two daughters, Mrs. Jas. Stewart of Ottumwa, S.Dk., and Ella of this place, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.The funeral was held at the East Paw Paw Church Wednesday, Apr. 5th at 10:30 a.m., Rev. O.T. Canfield officiating.
