John Klatt/Decatur, IL
I was doing some research on an ancestor John Klett and dicovered in the 1880 census he and his family went by the spelling Klatt. He was born in Saxony in 1827 and married Carlotta/Charlotte Weinbrenner, b. 1837 Prussia , in Decatur, 1857. It appears they started going by the name Klett after 1880. I would not have noticed but my Great Grandmother Lillie was listed with the family and when Lillie and my Great Grandfather filed for a marriage license, the signed names were Klett but the name on the front of the form was Klatt. I had thought this to be an error. Apparently not. It is the name used in the Illinois marriage files. For the first time we knew Lillie had a brother and two sisters. Lillie's birth year and date fit also. I have John Klett's death certificate and the ages fit also. So they went from Klatt to Klett. The whole family wrote the name as klett. Official documents list them as Klatt. Any insights? Anyone know of any Klatts in central Illinos? Thanks for your time.
