HISTORY OF THEOBALD KLEE
Theobald Klee was born August 10, 1828 in Langenbach, Bezirks, Kusel, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany. The location of the Kusel District is in the Rhineland on the Nahr River west of Worms. He left the Fatherland on March 15, 1851 when he was 23 years old and arrived in New York on April 21, 1851. He first went to Pittsburgh and engaged immediately in gardening. In 1852, he came to Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio and on January 31, 1854 married Nancy Jane Lowman. She was the daughter of Abraham and Deborah (Merritt) Lowman, also of Bellaire.
Theobald and Nancy lived on Hartenstein Hill where their first child, John Edward, was born. On December 8, 1864, they purchased ten acres of bottom land on McMahons Creek about two miles west of Bellaire. They built a large brick house in 1872 and planted and harvested vegetables and berries for the Bellaire market. An adjacent seven acres was purchased on December 27, 1879. The first parcel cost $2,000.00 and the second $675.00.
Two daughters, Sara Catherine and Nora, were also born to Theobald and Nancy.
The Klee's were members of the Bellaire Christian Church. Theobald served on the finance committee and donated several hundred dollars to the erection of a new church. He was a deacon and elder in the church for many years.
As the area around the homestead developed, the village became known as "Klee". The name is still used: however, it is now officially West Bellaire.
On April 8, 1880, the Klee's purchased eighty two acres of land on Tunnel Hill, about three miles west of Bellaire, for $1,800.00. The hill was in a prime coal area and several acres on the top was flat enough for some farming. Their son, John Edward, lived on this property for most of his married life. The county map of 1880 shows that the property adjacent to the west was owned by Robert Merritt who was Nancy Jane's cousin.
Nancy Jane died of tuberculosis on February 8, 1882. She was only 49 years old. Sara Catherine continued to live in the home place on McMahons Creek with her father after her marriage to William Robertson.
In April, 1892 Theobald went back to Germany on the Steamship "La Bretaque" and in September, 1893 visited the Worlds Fair in Chicago. He stayed at the Hotel South Shore while there.
Theobald lived to the age of 85, departing this world on December 27, 1913. He left two children (Nora preceeded him in death in 1898), 16 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Five other grandchildren died in 1881.
His will dated February 1, 1911 left the Tunnel Hill property to John Edward and his children, the ten acres including the brick house and out buildings to Sara Cathrine and her children and seven acres of the McMahon Creek property to Nora's children. Four lots in West Bellaire were to be sold and the proceeds divided between John, Sara, and Nora's children. These lots were not sold until 1967.
Theobald and Nancy Jane are buried on a high point in the old section of Rock Hill Cemetery in Bellaire, Ohio.
MEMORIES, STORIES, LORE, AND LEGENDS
The bricks to build the homestead were fired on the property by Theobald: however, this cannot be verified.
Burdette Klee
The "Old Red Brick" homestead was built about 1872. Theobald's daughter, Sara Catherine Robertson and family occupied the house after Theobald's death. Still later, it was home to Sara's daughter, Nora Riley and her family. The house was rented for a time and vandalism took it's toll. A fire virtually destroyed it in 1973 and it was then demolished. The property is currently owned by Nora Riley's children and is being used for community gardening.
Margaret Mull
The Tunnel Hill farm was changed considerably when the new Tunnel Hill Road was widened and rerouted through the property. The farm is now owned by Theobald's great grandson, Roscoe Klee Jr.
Roscoe Klee Jr.
Theobald donated the sycamore tree's to Bellaire for the City Park. Sycamore trees were also planted by him on the McMahon Creek property.

HISTORY OF JOHN EDWARD KLEE
John Edward Klee was born on August 16, 1854 at Hartenstein Hills, Bellaire, Ohio, the first child of Theobald and Nancy Jane (Lowman) Klee. When John was about ten years old he moved with his parents to a new, large brick house on McMahons Creek, about two miles west of Bellaire. He learned farming and gardening and followed this as a primary vocation for most of his life.
On December 31, 1873, he was united in marriage to Phebe Ellen Long, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Workman) Long, who then resided on Winding Hill Road in Bellaire. John and Phebe lived in a log house at the foot of Tunnel Hill on property belonging to John's father, Theobald. Six children were born there. In 1881 a diphtheria epidemic struck the community and the first five children died within a period of twelve days. The obituaries in the local papers read as follows:
"The month of August, 1881, will remain ever in painful memory to the family of Mr. John E. Klee, who resides two miles west of Bellaire. Mr. Klee is a young man but 28 years of age. Some years ago he came to Bellaire and married Miss Phebe Long and since that time they have lived on a farm close to Mr. Theobald Klee, father of John. Six children were born to them and all seemed well until the dread disease of death claimed its first victim in the person of their oldest child, Clara, who had but turned her eighth year; soon followed Margaret Jane, a daughter past 5 years of age; then came Martha Ann, in the third year of her age; and then Elmer, a son of but 2 years of age; and this morning, Harry, a boy between 6 and 7 years of age died of the same dread disease, and the baby of only seven months is also sick. Mr. Klee was in the city today, making arrangements to bury his fifth child. He has only recovered from an attack of the sore throat and the fever, and is barely able to go about. He seems to be almost without hope and his appearane indicates that the terrible affliction that has been heaped upon his family in so short a time, has racked the whole man, and left but the form, with very little physical or mental life."
and
"Never has it fallen to my lot to chronicle so sad a succession of bereavements. It has deeply touched the hearts of our entire city. One after another they fell like grain before the sickle, all victims of that terrible scourge of the children, diphtheria. Such a time seems to call for our tears and silent sympathy, rather than for words. And yet there is a silver lining even to this dark cloud. called from earth as they are while yet so young, "untouched by sorrow and unsoiled by sin", it is unspeakable comfort to hear the Master saying "Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven". Such are not, can not, be lost. They are but transplanted to bloom eternally in the Paradise of God. May we all "become as little children" and may the Great Shepherddeal pitifully, tenderly, with these crushed and broken hearts, and help them to be true, wise shepherds to the one precious little lamb that still remains of all their flock."
The youngest son, John, did survive.
John Edward and Phebe left the log house with only the clothes they were wearing and later moved into a house on top of Tunnel Hill, on a farm owned by John's father, Theobald. There, six more children were born and raised. The family operated a small farm and supplied vegetables and berries to the Bellaire market. They were members of the Bellaire Christian Church and John E. was also a member of the Bellaire Masonic Lodge No. 267 F & AM.
Phebe Ellen died on December 28, 1909 when she was 56 years old. Her obituary indicated she died after an operation at the North Wheeling Hospital for a liver problem.
John Edward married Flora Marquis, of Caldwell, Ohio in 1913. They lived on the Tunnel Hill farm until 1918 when they moved to a house in Caldwell. A farm near Caldwell served as a week-end retreat.
John and his sons operated a coal mine on the east side of Tunnel Hill. In 1918, before their move to Caldwell, John, Flora, and his children, as partners in the Klee Coal Co., leased the coal rights under Tunnel Hill to Schick Cooperative Coal Co., reserving the right to mine coal on the left side of the entry.
John Edward died Sunday, March 13, 1932 when he was 77 years old, after a lengthy illness. The funeral was held at the Old Klee homestead in Klee and burial was at Rock Hill Cemetery next to Phebe. He left behind seven children, twenty eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His will left all his possessions to his wife, Flora.
Flora continued to live in Caldwell and died at the age of 86 on September 4, 1950. She is buried at the Sharon Cemetery in Caldwell. Her final estate of $162.23 was divided between her sister, Anne Lowman, and her nieces and nephews.
MEMORIES, STORIES, LORE, AND LEGENDS
After the fourth child died, Phebe went to a big rock overlooking the creek. This was a special place where she went often for solitude. She was gone a very long time. Her friends and family could find no words to comfort her. Two days later her fifth child died.
Helen Meager
In 1936, the Ohio River flooded. The back waters on McMahons Creek were so high that it lifted the log house from it's foundation. The sons and grandsons of Theobald who lived in the area tied ropes in the tops of the trees and attached the ropes to the cabin. They were then able to shift it back to it's foundation.
Burdette Klee
The old log house was destroyed by fire on February 7, 1963. Phebe is reported to have died of cancer and John Edward of the gout.
Phoebe Dickerhoof
In 1909 when Phebe knew she was becoming very ill, at that time John was working on road construction in Bridgeport. One day, Phebe asked her son, Lewis, then 10 years old, to hitch up the team to the wagon. She took a good suit of clothes for John and Lewis drove her to Bridgeport where the picture was taken. Afterward, John returned to work and Phebe and Lewis went home.
Lewis KLee/Burdette Klee
John Edward's second wife, Flora (Marquis) helped serve breakfast to the survivors of the dirigible "Shenandoah" when it crashed near her sister's farm at Caldwell, Ohio on September 3, 1925.
Burdette Klee
Part of the agreement of the Klee Coal Company and Schick Coop. Coal Co. in 1918 was to sell all the mining equipment to John Edward's sons, Alva, Roscoe, John Jr., and Lewis for $20000.00. This equipment included a team and wagon and one gray mule.
Lewis's job at the mine was to lead the mule with the loaded cart to the entrance of the mine, dump the coal, and lead the mule back again for refilling the cart. Burdette has the whip that Lewis used on the mule.
Burdette Klee
The children of John Edward, with the exception of Howard, who remained single, settled in the Tunnel Hill area after marrage.
John Jr. and Janie (Brown) first resided in the log house. They then moved to a house on the south side of Tunnel Hill Road at the top of the hill. Later the family occupied the farm house on top of Tunnel Hill where John had lived as a child.
John Edward built a two family home at the base of Tunnel Hill on the East side of Rock Run. Mina and Bill Goldsmith and, also, Ella and Mark Meager lived there when they were first married. The Goldsmith's later moved to West Bellaire and the Meagers to Brooks Run.
Roscoe and Blanche (Johnson) married and started housekeeping in the double house and eventually bought the property. Lewis and Maude (Tubaugh) moved to one side of the house when they were married. A coal mine was opened into the hill off the back entrance to the house. The coal was used both for heating and cooking for years. Roscoe Klee Jr. now owns the property and still lives there.
Alva and Ursula (Jackley) built a home on Tunnel Hill Road at the entrance to Rock Hollow and started a green house business there. Alva's son, Frank, continues to live there.
