I am descended from Enos Knapp, Sr, born 1744, died 1824 buried Old Tomac Ave Cemetery, Old Greenwich; and his wife Mary Lockwood, buried with him. I have their wills. I do NOT have proof on their own parents, and wish greatly I could find that. I have some leads, and theories, which others before have tried to work with, to little avail.Let me first list the children of the above: Isaac W., Mary (married Whitfield Peck), Rhoda, married first Gershom Jessup, then Benjamin Page, and lastly Enos, Jr born 1787(my direct line.)
Some have thought that Charles and Titus, both buried fairly close to the Enos Sr and Enos Jr above, might be some kind of relative, perhaps brothers. No proof. And then, I read an abstract on that Titus who died 1838, listed in the Oct 1838 issue of the Democratic Sentinel of Stamford, that he "is the son of Joseph." !! startle! Now, I wonder if Joseph is the man we should be linking to this particular (there are many )Titus! Also, there are many Joseph knapps. To sort them out, one has to track them all!Good luck and share what you find. The Greenwich Hist. society of Greenwich Ct, has a notebook by Mabel L. Hendrie and she jotted down thoughts that locals had, guesses as to relationships.
Just as a preliminary guess, if we took just one Joseph who might be an age to be this Titus' father, one could be D-46 in the NIcholas KNapp book, b. Dec 1706 in Stamford, wife not known. This guy was son of Caleb and Hannah(C-10)Knapp. That's just a guess.
in the Hendrie notebook, 'Aunt Maria' wondered if the above Enos' father was either Nehemiah or Charles.Nehemiah that I see as a possiblity is D-36, b. 1714, who died at Stamford, Ct. But the only 'proven' son of this guy was Nehemiah, Jr. born 1741, E-101 in the Nic. Knapp book.
another candidate might be D-10, Ebenezer and wife Eliz. Finch KNapp. as parents for the Enos, Sr. above.
My latest theory, a weak one but all I have, is a small tie involving the fact that my Enos Knapp had land in Greenwich which , at the time of his will, bordered land owned by a Seth Palmer. AND, this Seth Palmer, in 1784, purchased at least some of this land from either or both a David KNapp and buddy Nehemiah, Jr, both who seemed to have gone over to the loyalists/enemy during the Revolutionary war. So did that mean that because my Enos had land next to David or Nehemiah, that they are necessarily related? Maybe, maybe not, but I wish I could acquire land records and the history of ownership all around there!
Write me if you want me to type the paragraph on this, or to see the paragraph from Enos will describing the area of land in the will and who were neighbors. I don't know how to see physically where all this land is, so strange the way it is described! I don't think they made plat maps for back then, does anyone know?
Again, there were many Titus of a similar age, many Enos's of fairly close ages, and also Charles Knapps who are hard to keep straight. We need to work together, that's for certain! Any ideas appreciated! Also, anyone thinking about DNA testing? New things on the horizons!
