Knapp family, NY to Mich
I am researching the family of Gilbert and Ann (Dearin) Knapp, who came from Dutchess county, NY, by way of Cayuga County, to Michigan. Gilbert was a younger brother of my great-great grandfather, Israel Knapp, of Walden, Orange County, NY.
The seven sons (there is a statement from the family doctor that says there
were eight) that I can name, and their approximate years of birth (estimated from 1850 census), are: John, 1826; Chauncey, 1828; Edward, 1832; William, 1834; Matthew, 1834; Robert, 1837;and George F., 1839.

Robert's "Certificate of Disability for Discharge" from the First Michigan Cavalry (in 1862) says he was born in Cayuga County, NY. The 1850 census for Calhoun County says they were all born in New York.

In part, it says: "for the ten years last prior to the year 1859 he resided in the Town of Albion, county of Calhoun and State of Michigan. That in the year 1859 he removed to New Hudson in the County of Oakland, where he resided until the 12" of May 1873, except during the time he was in the army. . . . That since about May 12" 1873 he has resided at Traverse City Michigan." In the file, the Oakland county town where they lived is also sometimes called Kensington.

A cousin, H.M. Dearing, filed an 1877 statement from Albion, so it seems likely that some of the elder Knapp brothers may have remained there when the family moved to New Hudson.More Replies:
