Actually, Knickerbocker is the name that evolved after Washington Irving's satire about Diedrich Knickerbocker. The name had been spelled KNICKERBACKER and other forms, descending from Harmen Janssen Knyckerbache, formerly van Wye, a Dutchman who coined the name, meaning "marblemaker." Whereas all old Dutchmen may have been called Knickerbockers, there is definitely a surname, and all such people named Knickerbocker descend from Harmon Janssen.
